Majora's Mask
Walkthrough
The Begining
After the opening cinema, the game is pretty straightforward. Chase stalkid until you cant do that anymore. This is a brief re-introduction to the basic control of Zelda for the N64.
Pursue the stalkid through the forest and you will fall down a pit. This is where all the game starts. Stalkid transforms you into a deku scrub!!
After this, Tatl, the fairy holds you back, but cant get through the doors that were shut behind stalkid. She agrees to help you in the hopes of catching up with stalkid. But in your deku form, there is a limitation to what you can do.
You should practice your deku abilities. There are a lot of flowers in this room. Dive into a flower by standing directly on top of it and holding A until a puff of smoke comes out. Then fly by pressing and holding the joystick forward. You can only fly for a short time, so be warned. If you want to stop hovering, press A while you are in midair.
After this next area, you enter an odd room. That resembles a windmill. This is the clock tower. The place where you start, and finish the game.
You talk to the mask salesman and he says that he will teach you a song if you have a musical instrument....AND if you get *his* mask back.. So, he tells you to get his mask back. Well, sorry, you cant.....yet.
Find the Fairy Fountain for further progress in the game.
In this deku form, you cant do much. From here, go to east clock town and wait there until night. When night begins, you will see a fairy floating in the middle of the area. Use the Deku Launcher in a corner between a game room and the inn and use it to fly over to the fairy. Now go back to south clock town and turn right, past the clock tower, into North Clock town. To your left is a hill with an exit. Go in there and you will be in a fairy fountain. The fairy is now complete and will grant you a magic meter. Pretty cool huh?
Back in north clock town, there is a kid shooting at a large balloon. Hold down B and shoot the balloon with your bubble to pop it. The kid will ask you if you if you want to join the bomber gang. Say yes and you will be put to a test. Find all 5 members of the bombers before the next dawn. So, the chase is on. There are 2 kids in north clock town, one in west clock town and 2 in east clock town. You should have plenty of time to look for them so no biggie. (Oh, by the way, that guy in north clock town that floats with the red balloon will sell you a map of clock town for 5 rupees. Pop the balloon the same way you did with the other one.) Once you catch all 5 kids, you are told a secret password. Use this in East clock town by the kid blocking an exit to the town.
In this passage, (sewer really) there are next to no enemies. Very easy to cross. Simply jump from platform to platform and then into the next room. Avoid the skulltula.
You are now in a room with another balloon. Pop it the same way you did in clock town. Now climb up the ladder, and into the observatory. Now go up the stairs past the scarecrow. The man by the telescope will ask you if you want to look through the telescope. Look up at the clock tower, and zoom in. You will watch a short cinema scene of a tear falling from the moon. Head outside and pick it up.
Now, go to south clock town by the yellow flower. Another deku says that he wants a special stone for his wife, so when you are given the chance, show the moon tear to him. He will leave and give you the “Land Title Deed”. Now is the time where you can wait and chill...until the Night of the Final Day. Feel free to explore all of Clock Town. Its huge.
On the night of the final day, at 12:00 am, the clock tower will open. Use the yellow deku flower to fly up and into the clock tower. You will see stalkid floating up there with your ocarina. Shoot him with a bubble and he will drop it. Now, pick up your ocarina and you will watch a small scene, of zelda teaching you the song of time. Play that ASAP!!
That will save and warp you to the dawn of the first day! Now, since you have your ocarina back (well, deku link pulls out a set of pipes to play on) go into the clock tower again and pull out your pipes. He will teach you the song of healing to rid you of the deku curse.
You are now a human again! And you also have the deku mask. Now is where you can participate in a variety of quests to get hearts, some more masks etc etc...
Head over to the Heart Piece guide to see which ones you can get at this point, or over to the Mask Guide to see which ones you can get right now.
Now head to west clock town and into the door with the stained glass. There is a scarecrow in there. Pull up your ocarina (it is an ocarina now) and it will ask you for an original song. After this, he will tell you a secret of the song of time. Play the notes backwards to slow time down and play the notes twice in a row to speed up time.
Now, its time to head out of your home. But first, register for bank membership in west clock town. Save up 200 rupees to get a bigger wallet.
The Road to Woodfall
Now, its time to head south. Through the south clock town gate, talk to the guard and he will let you outside...because in human form, you have a weapon, Your Kokiri sword. Coming out this way, head straight, and through the log tunnel where you will watch a short cinema of the two fairies and stalkid playing, but then stalkid hurts the mask salesman and takes Majora’s Mask away from him.
After the cinema, you are in a swamp area. You should notice the green clothed map salesman floating up there. Shoot him down and buy a map of woodfall. This will come in handy.
In this next area, you are officially in the southern swamp. Go into the building you see before you and talk to the man at the left counter. He will give you a pictograph box for the photo contest. Take a good picture and he will reward you. (See Heart Pieces)
If you swim through the water, to the left, there is another area to be explored, in here is the Hag’s Potion shop. Ignore this place for now. Now, go into the other exit to this place and now you are in the Woods of Mystery. Talk to the monkey and it will tell you to follow it. So follow it. At the end of the chase, you see a witch that was struck down by stalkid. She needs something that restores health, but you have nothing of that kind. Exit the woods of mystery and into the potion shop. Talk to the hag and she will give you a Bottle with a Red Potion. Take the potion back to the hag.
She will drink it, and then ride back to the tourist center. Go to the tourist center and talk to the hag you saved. She says that she will let you take a free tour of the swamp! Pretty cool huh? While on the tour, you will stop at the deku palace. Get off here.
You can go to a variety of places, but only one is entirely safe. The water here is poisonous so don’t jump in. Now, head forward (in deku form) and talk to the guards. They will let you in. In the cage to the left of the king’s room is a trapped monkey. Talk to him. He wants you to rescue him.
Now head back and into the room on your left (upon exiting the throne room) Avoid the line of sight of the guards (For an easier time, wait until night because you will see their line of sight) and fall into the hole. (Make sure you have a bunch of rupees. Buy 3 magic beans from the man down here. And Get a bottle of water from the little pool.
Now that you have magic beans, and some water, go to the right of the castle and follow the lily pads to the end. There is a bean hole here. Plant the bean and then water the seedling. The bean will grow into a giant leaf that will hoist you up to the top of the ledge.
Now, use the deku flowers as a form of transportation. Hop from one flower to the next to reach the final ledge. Cross the wooden beam and then prepare for more flying. (If the mad scrubs give you trouble, shoot them with a bubble) After this part, you will find yourself in the cage the monkey is it. Talk to him and then with the pipes, play the song he teaches you...the Sonata of Awakening. This song will open up the woodfall temple for you!
Now that you are caught, because of how loud the pipes are, you are thrown out of the deku palace. Not to worry though. Now, follow the lily pads to the right of the palace and there is a ledge with a deku flower. Go up there and then you will be above the swamp itself. Standing on a canopy. There are two dragonflies in here. Kill them by becoming human link and slashing them with your sword when they swoop down. Now, turn back into a deku. Fly from flower to flower and onto the ledge with that familiar owl. On the statue, is a song. A very useful song. The Song of Soaring.
This song will warp you to any of the owl statues in all of Termina. (See warp point guide)
Now, use the deku flower on that ledge and go over to the other ledge and enter woodfall. The water here, is whats causing the entire swamp to be poisonous. So you must put an end to the evil here.
Take caution with the enemies here and kill as many as you can as a deku. Use bubbles on the ramming enemies and spin attacks on the mad scrubs. The dragonflies shouldn’t give you any trouble.
Now, once you reach the central platform, stand on the podium and play the sonata of awakening. This will cause the woodfall temple to rise up out of the water. Use the deku flower to fly over to it.
Time for your first dungeon!!
(Note, before ANY dungeon, play the song of inverted time. It is Cv,A,C>,Cv,A,C>)
The Woodfall Temple
This is more like a test to see if you learned all you should have for basic controls of Zelda. Because if you haven’t, then you are in for a rude awakening!
If you fall, you will be attacked by enemies called Black Boes. They aren’t really something to worry about. Just use the spin attacks and try again. For the central platform, you must go through the center of it, because 2 skulltulas are guarding the sides.
In this next room, you see a weird shaped platform with a short unlit torch on it. Take note of this because it will become of importance later. The weird flowers resting in the water will only let deku link cross, because they will EAT human link! You cant get to the next floor right now, so don’t worry.
Hop across the mutant flowers and across the room and you can enter another where there are more mutant flowers and a deku flower in the center. Use the deku flower to fly to the chest and get a Key. Now go back to the room with the wooden ledge and unlock the door.
You will be in a room with a block and a series of walkways. Push the block up and then go left on the walkways. There will be a barred door, and to the right of that, a stairway. Go up the stairway and jump down onto the ledge with the skulltula. Kill the skulltula for a fairy and then push the block two spaces forward. Now light a deku stick on fire and follow the walkway and light the torch near the barred door.
In this room, you see 2 dragonflies. Raise your shield as human link and block their attacks, then immediately counterattack. Killing both nets you the Dungeon Map. Now, use the torch you just lit to light another deku stick on fire and take it up the stairs, across the platforms and burn the web.
Now that you have the map, you can see where you have been and where you havent. Burn down the web to enter a creepy hallway infested with Black Boes. As a deku, just charge through the hallway with your spin attack.
Now become a human and light all the other torches in this room to unlock the door. (After all of the torches are lit, clear the room of any more boes to get a chest with a fairy.)
In this next room, there are horizontally moving platforms and deku flowers. There are also 2 more dragonflies. Get to the end of the room by whatever means necessary. You are now above the room with that wooden flower thingie. Step on the switch as Human Link (deku is too light to press it down) and then ladders will appear.
Go thru the door with the 2 ladders by it and then use the deku flower in the middle to fly up to the room with the 2 torches. There are three turtles in here. Kill them by diving into the deku flowers and waiting for them to move over them, then while they are over the flowers, pop up underneath them to kill them. Do this to all 3 turtles to get the Compass.
Now, head back up one of the ladders and into the door near the switch you pushed down. In this room, you are above the room with the deku flower in the middle. Go into the room at the bottom of this area to fight a Dinofos. Keep your shield raised at all times and when it attacks, block, then counter attack. About 5-6 hits later, it will die. (Note: When you attack it, it will counter attack with a spray of fire breath, so when you attack, retreat immediately!)
Once you kill the dinofos, you get the Hero’s Bow!! A fine present indeed!
Head back into the room you came from and shoot the eye switch on the far side of the room to make the platform in the middle with the deku flower move up and down. Use the new moving platform to reach the door above the eye switch to fight the Gecko (Not to be confused with Geiko which could save you 15% or more on car insurance)
The first part of this fight is easy. Wait for it to come to you, then stab it with your sword. After doing so a couple of times, it calls in a turtle to ride on. Now, treat this fight the same way you did with the turtles in the compass room. THEN, when the turtle is stunned, shoot the gecko with arrows.
After you beat the gecko, you get the boss key! WOOO-HOOO!!!
You also notice that the gecko turns into a frog. Refer to the Heart Piece guide to see what this all means.
Now, head back to the room with the wooden flower thingy. Stand near the switch and in front of the lit torch and fire an arrow down onto the unlit torch on the wooden structure. This will clean up the water, nullify the plants, and start the wooden platform on a rotation. Jump onto the rotating platform and then time an arrow so that when you fire it, you will hit the other torch on the ledge sticking out of the wall in this room. This will unbar the lock to the final room before the boss room.
(There are some fairies that you can collect now. One is in the room with the block, under the bridge. The others are in the room with the wooden structure. One is right next to the door in a bubble and the others are in the final room) In this room, there are 3 skulltulas hanging from the ceiling and 2 dragonflies. Kill all of them with arrows.
Now, go down the ladder and use the deku flower to jump from alcove to alcove (collecting any fairies in the way) When you reach the top alcove on the left side of the ladder, fire an arrow at the crystal switch. This will douse the fires on the central platforms for a limited time so be quick. Now, hop into the flower, hop out of the flower and then time your flight so that you fall into the first hut. Then, use the deku flower in there to glide across the two platforms. Land on the second of the two platforms and then use that deku flower to reach the top of the 2nd hut. Use THAT deku flower to get to the final platform (avoid the torches) by gliding right in between the two torches. You are now at the boss arena! (Phew)
Head over to the boss section to learn how to defeat the Guardian of the Woodfall Temple: The Masked Jungle Warrior: Odowla.
After you beat Odowla, you watch a cinema and he teaches you the Oath to Order. This comes in handy near the end of the game.
Now, you will be teleported to the front of the temple. Cut the vines behind you to free the Deku Princess from her “prison.”
She needs you to take her back to the Deku Palace but needs to be carried. Sooooo.....get your empty bottle and carry her back to the deku palace. Become a deku to get past the guards, and when you are in front of the king, release her from the bottle! Ta-Da! You have just TOTALLY beaten the woodfall areas.
The Road to Snowhead
I suggest you save with the song of time now. Even though, you will lose all rupees, arrows, deku sticks, deku nuts fairies in the woodfall temple, etc...you will keep your songs, bow, ocarina, hearts, and every other item that is of GREAT importance.
Now, back to the dawn of the first day, get some arrows (By cutting grass, or by buying them or whatever.)
Go to the northern part of Termina field and you will see a large icicle hanging above 2 large chunks of ice. Shoot the icicle twice to make it pierce the ice so you can get through.
This area is very weird. It is completely covered in snow and ice. Plus, there are Blue Tektites moving around under the snow, so watch out. Make your way up the trail, using bombs or the blast mask to destroy the large snow boulders.
Once you are past this area, you will be in Mountain Village. And, uh, its covered in snow.
Head to the south eastern area of the village. This leads to an area with a frozen lake and a couple of rope brides connecting higher pieces of land. Cross these and ignore the enemies. Buy a map of Snowhead from the green guy in the balloon while you have the chance.
Follow this area and into the Goron Village. Go to the “bottomless pit” near the far end of the village and you will see again, that owl. He will fly away, but leave feathers that seem to float for a while. Follow the trail of feathers to reach the far away cliff.
Now, in the cavern across the ravine, there is a chest containing the Lens of Truth. Use this to find your way back.
Now, once you are back on the main land, you should notice a ghost goron. Talk to him and he will lead you to his tomb. This is all the way back in mountain village so just follow the ghost. Or if you don’t want to waste magic, the oval shaped shadow on the ground. Thats him.
Once you are in the mountain village, use your lens of truth to follow the invisible ladder on the icy wall that the ghost flies up against. Take the course of Right, Left, Right when the ladder branches off.
After a long cut scene, he will ask for you to heal his soul. Sooooo....play the song of healing for him. In return for putting his spirit to sleep, he gives you the goron mask. ROCK ON!!! You can also pull out the statue he is guarding for a nice hot spring. You will use this now. Get a bottle of hot spring water and take it to the rope bridge area. Look at some of the Large snow boulders until Tatl goes green. Punch the boulder with goron link and then unthaw the goron elder with your spring water (which should still be hot)
Talk to him and he will teach you the beginning of the Goron Lullaby.
Now in your goron form, go to Goron Village and pound in front of the door and you will open it. Go in and make your way up to the top level and then play the goron lullaby you have right now for that whining annoying child who never seems to stop crying!!
Play the Goron lullaby intro to the baby and he will teach you the following 2 notes. YESSS!!! The kid shut up! Now that you know the song puts gorons to sleep you can use this in 1 area.
Head back to mountain village and through the northern exit. This is snowhead pass. Goron roll all the way up and avoid the boulders as best you can. The snow here should give you plenty of traction to get the spikes to produce from your goron body.
Now you are in snowhead. Head up a while until you start to be pushed back by strong winds. If you look through your lens of truth, there is a huge goron that is causing all the strong winds. So play the Goron Lullaby for him to make him fall asleep and get out of the way.
Now, circle the mountain and up and up and up until you get to the top entrance.
SnowHead Temple
Welcome to hell frozen over (literally). The snowhead temple is very frustrating to complete. Probably because there is a room that lets you drop from the fourth floor to the basement (ouch).
It’s collllllllllld in here!!!!
From the start of the temple, use goron link’s punches to knock away the ice stalagmites and then push the block forward. You will notice a door covered with ice, problem is, there arent any hot springs in here. So come back to this room later. For now, just head to the room on the right. Forget about the white wolfos.
The bridge in this room is out, but if you can goron roll across it at full speed you can jump the gap. Now that this event is done, smash the crate for hearts or whatever. If you fall, no big deal. All you do is plummet into a pool of lava....but your goron form is 100% immune to lava! Pretty cool huh? Before you head to the door on the left, go up the stairs and get the map in this room.
Now backtrack and head into the room on the left You are now in the room that creates a very efficient shortcut from the 4th floor to B1. (You DO NOT want to take this often) Most of the doors in this room are locked, or frozen shut, but there is, however a frozen door with two torches near it. Fire an arrow through the torches and onto the ice to melt it.
Don’t go through this door yet though, you will be coming back to this place later. Go into the one door (besides the one you melted) that isnt frozen now. In this small room, grab hold of the blocks and pull them out to get into a small alcove. There is a key in the chest in the alcove. Now, use the door that you melted the ice on and it will take you back to the starting room. Use the key on the locked door.
There are a couple of ice blocks in here, you wont have to deal with them so kill the wolfos while you get the compass in this room. Now, after all the wolfos in this room are disposed of, use the blast mask on the wall on the far side of the entrance. This is a stairway that is very helpful.
It will lead up to a room with rock pillars frozen on top. Now, use your arrows and knock down the icicles on the ceiling down onto the pillars. Once all the ice has been destroyed, jump across to a ledge where you will find a large snowball. Destroy it to get a small key. Use the key to unlock a locked door in the room. In the next room go over to a round, orange switch on a ledge and use the goron pound to activate it. Now, jump across the newly risen pillar to the other side. Hit the green switch using the goron pound and then go over to the risen orange pillar you jump across on. Pound that down. Now, run over to the risen green switch before time runs out and jump back up onto the platform. Now you can access the door.
Go through the door to get into the next room. You’ll be in the main room again, but a floor up. Use the goron roll to get across to the other side. This next part is tricky, you will notice a snow bank to your right. Goron roll over it without touching the wall to get to another corner of the room. Now, jump this broken bridge using the Goron Roll. Enter the next room and fight the Wizrobe to get the Fire Arrows. Exit that room and jump the bridge again. Now head over to the right, where there should be a metal ledge by the snow bank. Use that to get over to another side of the room. Now, use your fire arrows to melt the ice, but don’t go up the stairs yet. Now, you have to jump down to the middle of the previous floor without falling all the way to the bottom.
Now, melt the ice off from one of the Green-rimmed doors. This room will have some Freezards in it. Kill them then light all the torches with Fire Arrows to open the door. Go through the door that had just opened and pound the switch in there. This should make the center pillar rise. Head back out and then go right. Unfreeze the door over there if its not already, and go back out into the main room of this dungeon. Go through the door with the red rim and torches beside it. In this next room, you should see a door with pots beside it, go through that door without worrying about the Wolfo. You will recognize this room, but don’t worry, you went the right way. Roll across the bridge and then unfreeze the ice on the side of the room. Kill all the Freezards to get a chest with a small key inside. Now, head to the staircase at the end of this room and go up.
In this room you will see a few things, A “living bombchu,” a square stand, a freezard up above, and a frozen eye switch. Kill the bombchu, jump onto the square, kill the freezard, and melt the switch with a fire arrow. The square will rise and you can gain access to the next floor. Exit back into the main room. Go up to the big pillar and break the blue layers with some goron punches. You will notice the metal ledge to the right of where you came in. Walk over the ledge to get to another corner of this room. Go up the stairs there and break the blue layer up there. Now, notice the snow ledge over by the wall? You have to roll down that without any guard rails. Be careful, you don’t want to fall.
Down at the bottom of it, you will see the final blue layer. Break that and get ready to roll back up that snow layer you came down on. Be careful not to hit the wall, it will hurt you bad in trying to get up. Once up, go over the pillar to the row of large snowballs. Break them all with your goron punch and head up the stairs. Jump the bridge here to get across. You will notice that the boss room is just ahead, but first…you need the boss room key. Turn into a Deku Scrub here and launch out of the launcher. Head left, and float down to the platform one floor down. Go inside the door there and fight one more enemy before the boss battle.
After defeating this Wizrobe, you will get the boss key. Head out and jump back down to the pillar in the middle below. Clear the row of snowballs with punches, and head up the stairs again. Roll across the bridge one last time to get to the boss door. Check the boss section to learn how to beat Goht.
